Boiler Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a new boiler cost?
The cost of a new boiler depends on the type and size of boiler you need, where it is being fitted and whether any extra work is required, such as moving the boiler or upgrading your controls. For a recommendation and price tailored to your home, use our online quote tool, which takes less than a minute, and we will follow up with a free survey. Finance options are also available to help spread the cost.
How much does a boiler service cost?
For room sealed boilers, our Level 1 Standard Boiler Service is £75 and our Level 2 Enhanced Boiler Service is £120. The Level 2 service includes everything in Level 1, plus a full strip down and clean of the burner, heat exchanger and electrodes, and an expansion vessel check and recharge. Open flued boilers are quoted separately.
How often should a boiler be serviced?
Your boiler should be serviced once a year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. An annual service keeps your boiler running safely and efficiently, helps to catch small faults before they become expensive breakdowns, and is normally a condition of your manufacturer’s warranty.
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
The most common causes are a small leak somewhere on the heating system, such as a radiator valve or pipe joint, a faulty pressure relief valve, or a problem with the expansion vessel. Pressure can also drop after you bleed your radiators. If you are having to top up the pressure regularly, there is an underlying fault that should be checked by an engineer.
What boiler is best for my home?
It depends on the size of your home and how much hot water you use. Combi boilers suit most small to medium homes with one bathroom, as they heat water on demand and need no cylinder. System boilers work with a hot water cylinder and are better for larger homes with more than one bathroom. Regular (heat only) boilers are usually a like for like replacement on older systems. As a Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer, we will recommend the right model at your free survey.
What size boiler do I need?
Boiler size is measured in kilowatts (kW) and depends on the number of radiators and bathrooms in your home, how well insulated it is and your hot water demand. As a rough guide, a 24–30kW combi suits a small to medium home with one bathroom, while larger homes with more radiators or a second bathroom usually need 30–40kW or a system boiler with a cylinder. We confirm the correct size during your free survey.
How long does a boiler last?
A modern boiler typically lasts 10 to 15 years, and often longer when it is serviced every year. Regular servicing, good system water quality and a magnetic filter all help to extend the life of your boiler.
Should I repair or replace my boiler?
If your boiler is under 10 years old and the fault is straightforward, a repair is usually the most cost-effective option. If it is over 10 to 15 years old, breaking down regularly, becoming expensive to run or parts are hard to source, a replacement often makes better financial sense. We will always give you honest advice on the best option for your boiler and budget.
How do I repressurise my boiler?
Check the pressure gauge on your boiler. When the heating is cold it should read between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it is lower, switch the boiler off and let it cool, then locate the filling loop underneath the boiler. Open the valves slowly until the gauge reaches 1 to 1.5 bar, close both valves fully and switch the boiler back on. Filling loops vary between models, so check your boiler manual first. If the pressure keeps dropping, please get in touch as there may be a leak or a faulty component.
